And in this synthesis of easy handling, supreme touring suitability, off-road potential and comfort for rider and pillion passenger, there’s simply no other motorcycle which does it better. That’s not just what we think: it’s the result of independent tests worldwide.

Yet the current version goes one step further still - with a level of 2-cylinder power which is unsurpassed, and not just within its own segment. The reason is the new DOHC engine*, which first displayed its impressive performance in the legendary HP2 Sport. For the R 1200 GS, torque was given higher priority than output in line with practical considerations. And you can feel it. 120 Nm at the peak at 6000 rpm is one thing, but the consistently higher level of torque in the relevant range up to 5000 rpm can be fully experienced. The output has been increased to 81 kW (110 bhp) at 7750 rpm. The supreme riding pleasure is underscored by a powerful sound from the new exhaust system with exhaust flap which will everyone will love. Together with the new paint finishes, a wide range of special equipment features such as the unique off-road ESA and ASC and extensive motorcycle fittings, there is virtually no situation in which the R 1200 GS doesn’t fit perfectly. And that applies to all riders - so take a test ride now!

Kawasaki Z1000SX 2010

Loosely based on Kawasaki’s excellent Z1000, the SX fits snugly in to the gap between said naked bike and the track orientated ZX-10R, making it a grown-up bike for the real world. The near 140bhp inline four motor gives sporting potential, but creature comforts like a new seat, vibration reduction and additional fairing make it a viable long-distance touring bike. For many riders this is the all round bike they’ve been waiting for - practical and fun at the same time, and far more eye catching than the competition too.

It’s the same 1043 inline four cylinder engine from the Z1000. Thankfully Kawasaki haven’t de-tuned the engine or water downed any of the fun factor, so you still get a claimed 138bhp. But its not all about peak power - there is real usable grunt from as little as 4000rpm and a lovely spread of mid range grunt. Towards the top of the revs there's a nice little kick at 7,000, which adda a bit of zest. Fuelling is excellent - one of the best motors around at the moment combining real world usability and top end rush.

Like the Z1000, the SX features a horizontal rear shock and the 41mm inverted fully adjustable forks. But because the SX is 10kg heavier than the standard Zed, the suspension has been altered to compensate for the extra bulk, rake is also a fraction less. Considering the bikesn weight, it can be hustled along with ease, even offering loads of confidence at peg scraping angles of lean. It's always secure and planted and the larger, more touring oriented seat offers more comfort for both rider and pillion.

Kawasaki have tried to make the SX as sporty as possible to attract sports bike enthusiasts. They’ve done this by giving the bike a sporty dash, but it lacks touring credentials and it's not adjustable from the handlebar, like say a BMW for example. The screen can only be adjusted manually too. However, the SX does boast radial brakes, petal racing discs, multi-adjustable suspension and sexy quad exhaust cans. With the R 1200 R, BMW Motorrad cultivates a tradition in roadster construction with stretches back over decades. With a spirited output of 80 kW (109 bhp), the naked bike of the flat twin “Boxer” series offers a virtually perfect synthesis of riding dynamics, agility and classic motorcycle design.

Fitted with this package, the R 1200 R not only has an on-board computer but also heated grips and a main stand.

In this version, the R 1200 R particularly does justice to more exacting demands in relation to touring/travel suitability with a new comfort seat which is exclusively available as part of this package. As in the standard version, the seat height is 800 millimetres but with an inner leg length of 1840 mm (standard version: 1800 mm), thus providing an ergonomic triangle designed for even greater comfort. The specific ergonomic needs of tall riders are addressed by the optionally available high comfort seat with height of 830 mm and an inner leg length of 1860 mm.

The Sport windshield ensures perceptible relief for the upper body and further enhanced ride comfort, especially over longer stretches. For carrying luggage the special model of the R 1200 R has two 32-litre common locking panniers and a luggage rack.

The package “Touring Special” can be combined with all the standard paint finishes of the R 1200 R. A special touch is also added by the chrome exhaust system and the LED direction indicators.
